Participant information
By joining debates and discussions on this platform you will be participating in a research study.
Before you decide whether to participate, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve.
Please take time to read the following information carefully and feel free to contact the us if you would like more information or if there is anything that you do not understand.
We would like to stress that you do not have to participate in our work, but by entering debates you agree to take part in our research.
Thank you for reading this.
Purpose of the study
Marine Beacon is an EU funded project that will address gaps in our current understanding of how fisheries bycatch impacts protected, endangered and threatened species.
The project will work with fisheries, policy and conservation stakeholders, as well as the general public, to develop and test innovative tools and techniques for better monitoring of these species and to better mitigate risks of bycatch, ultimately to ensure healthier seas and more sustainable fisheries.
This platform aims to collect knowledge and opinions from a wide range of viewpoints. Facilitated debates will be used to help us understand which solutions that address bycatch best suit all parties involved.
Do I have to take part?
Participation is completely voluntary and you are free to withdraw your participation at any time, without explanation, and without incurring a disadvantage.
What will happen if I take part?
First, you should identify the space best suited to your knowledge and experience. Within this space you will be asked to read material provided on the platform about topics of interest and on the latest scientific developments. You will then be asked to contribute your point of view related to these topics and comment on the solutions that have been presented to you.
How will my data be used?
We process your personal data in accordance with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The purpose of the processing is the implementation of the research project OceanICU to investigate ocean carbon. The legal basis for the processing of this data is provided under Article 6 (1) (a) and Article 6 (1) (f) GDPR and extends to the processing of special category data.
Your personal data is processed by the project team at the Marine Institute and will not be transmitted to third parties outside the project. The information provided by you will be used for research purposes and the results will be used within the project to inform ongoing work.
We will anonymise or pseudonymise your data and results will be published or transmitted to other partners of the research project.
We ensure that no data will be shared with third parties except in the form of pseudonymised and/or aggregated research data and results.
Also, the pseudonymised/ aggregated results will be used to generate publications addressing the scientific community (e.g. through publications in scientific journals) as well as policy-makers and the broader public (e.g. through policy briefs), and they will be presented at conferences and workshops.
All information shared will be treated confidentially and their publication remains pseudonymous to ensure that no conclusions can be drawn with respect to your identity or personal data.
To safeguard good scientific practice, all data will be stored securely for a period of five years after the end of the project, after which it will be deleted or shredded using appropriate document shredding services.
Are there any benefits in taking part?
Yes, by taking part in this study you have the opportunity to add your voice to our research and ensure outputs from Marine Beacon have considered all of those interested in the issue of bycatch.
What will happen to the results of the study?
The results will also form part of a research paper/s, which will later be published online in an academic journal and be presented at conferences. Your personal information, including any individually identifiable information, will not be published. You may withdraw from the research at any time, and your personal data will be immediately deleted.
What will happen if I want to stop taking part?
You are free to withdraw from the participating in the platform at any time with no consequences for you.
