Mapping Marine Life in the Bay of Biscay
Seabirds, cetaceans and the biodiversity hotspots of South Gascony
French Understanding where marine wildlife lives, feeds and rests is essential for effective ocean conservation. Published in 2018 and coordinated by Iker Castège and Émilie Milon, the Atlas of Seabirds and Cetaceans of South Gascony brings together scientific knowledge on marine wildlife from the Gironde Estuary to the Bidassoa.
Drawing on the contribution of around twenty experts, the atlas presents approximately 50 species and highlights key areas for marine predators along the Nouvelle-Aquitaine coast, including the Capbreton and Cap Ferret canyons, the Arcachon Basin and the Gironde Estuary. Beyond mapping biodiversity, it provides knowledge relevant to understanding changes in marine populations and supporting marine conservation and protected-area management in a changing climate.
