Reducing Dolphin Bycatch in the Bay of Biscay

The DELMOGES project investigates the increase in accidental common dolphin bycatch in the Bay of Biscay since 2016. Its findings suggest that climate-driven changes in the marine ecosystem are altering the distribution of small pelagic fish, such as sardines and anchovies, bringing dolphins closer to coastal fishing areas and increasing their risk of capture. The project combines data on dolphins, prey, environmental conditions and fishing activity to identify high-risk areas. It highlights the need for targeted management measures that can reduce bycatch while considering the ecological, economic and social impacts on fisheries.
