Toñi, the famous 60-year-old matriarch orca

Toñi (nicknamed “La Abuela” or “Grandmother”), approximately 60 years old, is an iconic matriarch and the oldest known member of the Iberian orca population. In early August 2026, researchers spotted Toñi in the Strait of Gibraltar with about ten wounds on her dorsal fin. Analysis of the images suggests that the wounds were caused by pellets from a hunting rifle, indicating an intentional attack. Although the injury is not immediately fatal, the possible presence of projectiles embedded in the fin (a highly vascularized area) raises concerns about the risk of infection and inflammation.

Consequences and Issues:

- The Iberian orca population is classified as critically endangered.

- Spanish authorities have launched an investigation to shed light on this act against a protected species.

The NGO Sea Shepherd has issued a call for witnesses, offering a reward of 10,000 euros, to identify the shooter.
