Clean Catch

Clean Catch UK is an innovative research and collaboration program supported and funded by the British government (through the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs—Defra). Its primary objective is to monitor, reduce, and, where possible, eliminate the incidental capture of vulnerable marine life (known as bycatch) in commercial fisheries in the United Kingdom. British waters are home to a rich biodiversity, but many so-called “sensitive” species (such as marine mammals, small cetaceans, seabirds, and certain sharks and skates) are at risk of being accidentally caught in fishing gear. This bycatch poses a major problem for animal welfare and ecosystem conservation, and can also create a difficult and stressful situation for the fishermen themselves.

Lancé en 2020 et entré dans une phase d'expansion (2024-2026), Clean Catch UK se distingue par sa volonté de travailler directement avec les pêcheurs :

   - Co-création de solutions : Plutôt que d'imposer des règles descendantes, le projet associe des scientifiques, des ONG, des technologues et les gens de mer pour concevoir des mesures à la fois efficaces pour protéger la faune et pratiques à utiliser au quotidien lors des opérations de pêche.

   - Groupes de discussion locaux (Local Focus Groups) : Des groupes de travail régionaux (notamment dans le Sud-Ouest de l'Angleterre) permettent d'impliquer activement les skippers et les acteurs locaux pour tester des dispositifs d'atténuation.

Key tools and areas of focus :

   - Le UK Wildlife Bycatch Mitigation Hub : Le projet a mis en place une plateforme interactive en ligne qui sert de compendium mondial. Elle répertorie les différentes méthodes d'atténuation testées (comme des dispositifs acoustiques pour éloigner certaines espèces ou des ajustements dans les périodes de pêche) en fonction des types d'engins et des espèces.

   - L'application de signalement (Clean Catch App) : Les pêcheurs disposent d'un outil numérique leur permettant de déclarer de manière volontaire les captures accessoires de manière à fournir aux scientifiques des données précieuses sur les zones et les périodes à risque (les "hotspots").

   - Knowledge exchange: The project serves as a hub for the exchange of expertise, sharing best practices not only across the United Kingdom but also internationally.

The program is led by a multidisciplinary team comprising specialized organizations and institutions such as the Arribada Initiative, MMO Consulting, the Center for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), and Mindfully Wired. It also involves broad-based consultative bodies, including fishing federations (such as the NFFO). It aims to demonstrate that sustainable commercial fishing and the protection of marine life are not mutually exclusive. By building on mutual trust, participatory science, and technological innovation, the project helps the United Kingdom meet its conservation goals set by the Fisheries Act while actively supporting fishing communities.
