Improving public guidance on seafood choices and bycatch risk
Discussions with fish consumers in France suggest a recurring challenge. Many people express concern about dolphin bycatch and marine biodiversity, but feel uncertain about what actions are realistic and effective in everyday shopping.
Participants often mentioned difficulties such as:
Understanding which labels and certifications matter
Knowing which fishing methods are linked to lower bycatch risk
Finding affordable alternatives
Judging whether individual consumer choices can make a meaningful difference
At the same time, participants showed interest in practical guidance (for example: clearer labels, better in-store information, and simple explanations of fishing methods and bycatch risk).
This raises an important question for Marine Beacon communication and stakeholder engagement:
How can public guidance on seafood choices become clearer, more credible, and easier to act on, while still reflecting the complexity of real fisheries?
We invite citizens, fishers, retailers, NGOs, scientists, and policymakers to share their views on which approaches are most useful, feasible, and trustworthy.
Your contributions will help inform future awareness and communication strategies under the Marine Beacon project.
