Improving Public Awareness of Bycatch

What Communication Approaches Are Effective and Acceptable?

Content

Raising public awareness of bycatch remains a major challenge for marine conservation and sustainable fishing. Many people care about marine biodiversity, but bycatch is often poorly understood, and communication on this issue can be difficult to design.

Different communication approaches are possible, for example:

  • Documentary-style reporting
  • Scientific explanations and expert-led content
  • Emotional storytelling
  • Humor-based awareness messages
  • Short social media formats (clips, infographics, influencer content)

Each approach may have different effects on understanding, trust, motivation, and public engagement. Some formats may attract attention but also create confusion, discomfort, or disengagement. Others may build trust but have a more limited reach.

This raises an important question for Marine Beacon communication and stakeholder engagement:

How can bycatch awareness campaigns be made clear, trustworthy, and engaging, while still being scientifically accurate and acceptable to the public?

We invite citizens, fishers, retailers, NGOs, scientists, communicators, and policymakers to share their views on which communication approaches are most useful, trustworthy, and appropriate.

Your contributions will help inform future awareness and communication strategies under the Marine Beacon project.
