Bird-scaring lines and faster-sinking hooks
As part of the European CIBBRiNA project, researchers are investigating ways to reduce the accidental capture of seabirds in commercial longline fisheries operating in UK waters.
Species such as northern fulmars, northern gannets and shearwaters can become accidentally hooked when attempting to feed on bait during fishing operations.
The research focuses on improving bird-scaring lines, also known as streamer lines or tori lines, which are deployed behind fishing vessels to prevent seabirds from approaching baited hooks.
Working with commercial fishers, researchers are developing lighter and more manageable versions of these devices to improve their effectiveness and facilitate their use during daily fishing operations.
The project is also exploring modifications that allow fishing hooks to sink more rapidly, reducing the time they remain accessible to seabirds near the surface.
These trials aim to identify practical and effective solutions for reducing seabird bycatch while maintaining fishing efficiency. The effectiveness of the modified devices remains subject to evaluation.
