The Strait of Gibraltar is a popular gathering place for marine mammals. Various species may pass through it during their seasonal migrations or on a more regular basis in the case of endemic species. The local subspecies of orcas are of particular concern, especially since a group has occasionally attacked the rudders of pleasure craft to the extent that shots have been fired at them, despite their status as a fully protected species. Less is known about the status of the bottlenose dolphin. Collisions with ferries are one of the major risks facing marine mammals, compounded by the risk of accidental bycatch in fisheries on the Atlantic and Mediterranean sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. .
