Adapting vessel size and fishing practices to protect marine biodiversity

Content

Can the size of a fishing vessel influence its impact on marine biodiversity, its economic profitability, and coastal communities?

In September 2026, the environmental organisation BLOOM presented a study entitled “33 Metres: The Maximum Length the Ocean Can Tolerate”, in which it proposes setting a 33-metre threshold for European fishing vessels.

According to BLOOM's analysis, larger vessels are more frequently associated with certain fishing practices that have a significant environmental impact. The organisation also argues that the economic model of these vessels raises questions about operating costs, subsidies, and the distribution of fishing revenues.

Based on these findings, BLOOM proposes a gradual reduction in the European fleet of fishing vessels measuring 33 metres or more by 2035.

But is a vessel's length alone enough to determine its impact on the ocean?

The answer is more complex. Fishing techniques, target species, fishing areas, fuel consumption, and fisheries management measures also play an essential role.

A smaller vessel is therefore not necessarily synonymous with sustainable fishing, just as a larger vessel does not automatically have the same environmental consequences in every situation.

This proposal opens up an important debate on how to reconcile marine biodiversity conservation, the economic viability of fishing activities, and the future of coastal communities.

What do you think?

As part of the European MARINE BEACON project, we aim to give fishers, scientists, and other marine stakeholders a space to share their experiences and perspectives.

  • Do you think vessel size is a relevant criterion for assessing the environmental impact of fishing?

  • What other factors should be taken into account?

  • What solutions do you think could reduce impacts on marine ecosystems while preserving the economic viability of fishing livelihoods?

Your experiences and knowledge are essential to enriching this dialogue. Share your thoughts in the comments!
