Improving release practices

Content

Sea turtles accidentally caught in fishing gear are often released alive. However, their release does not guarantee their survival, particularly due to injuries caused by hooks, fishing lines, or the stress associated with capture.

A scientific study published in 2024 in Frontiers in Marine Science assessed the survival of 62 loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) accidentally caught by pelagic longline fishing vessels in the North Atlantic, off the coast of Canada.

Researchers equipped the turtles with satellite tags to monitor their movements, diving depths, and environmental conditions following release.

The results indicated an estimated annual post-release survival probability of 87.7% under the specific conditions of this fishery.

These findings highlight the importance of scientific monitoring to better understand the consequences of accidental capture and improve handling and release practices.

Within the CIBBRiNA project, these issues are also being addressed through research aimed at improving knowledge of post-release survival and developing recommendations adapted to different fisheries.
