Reserving the first three nautical miles for selective fishing methods
The Golden Miles project, led by the environmental organisation Défense des Milieux Aquatiques (DMA), proposes a new approach to organising fishing along the coastline.
Its central principle is to reserve the first three nautical miles for fishing methods considered selective – notably hook-and-line, trap nets and spearfishing – whilst keeping both fixed and mobile nets out of this zone.
According to the DMA, this coastal strip is a particularly important area for fish nurseries, as well as for the migration routes used by migratory fish such as salmon, sturgeon and shad.
The project also aims to reduce interactions between fishing gear and several protected or endangered species. In particular, DMA highlights the incidental catches of dolphins, porpoises, seals, turtles and seabirds.
The proposed priority solution is therefore simple in principle: to move the nets away from the coast rather than seeking solely to modify the nets or fit vessels with deterrent devices.
The aim is simultaneously to reduce certain non-targeted catches, to leave more habitat for juvenile fish and to promote low-impact coastal fishing.
