Better management of fisheries discards to reduce interactions with seabirds.
Accidental catches of seabirds represent a major conservation concern. Among the species affected is the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), which is regularly observed near fishing vessels.
A scientific study published in 2025 in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management evaluated different measures aimed at reducing interactions between seabirds and fishing vessels along the southern coast of Portugal.
Among the solutions investigated, temporarily retaining fish discards and offal on board during fishing operations proved particularly promising.
According to the researchers’ estimates, this practice could reduce the presence of Northern Gannets near fishing vessels by 47%, thereby decreasing their exposure to the risk of accidental capture.
These findings show that a relatively simple adjustment to fishing practices can help limit certain interactions, while also raising new questions about how this measure could be implemented in different fishing contexts.
What do you think?
As part of the European MARINE BEACON project, we aim to create a space where ornithologists, naturalists, and others interested in seabirds can exchange knowledge, observations, and concerns.
Have you ever observed these types of interactions at sea? Do you think this measure could be effective? What other solutions, challenges, or questions would you like to share?
Your experiences and knowledge can enrich the collective discussion. Share your thoughts in the comments!
